It has been a while since I last wrote about my WOWs (Word of the Week) so it’s time to unpack my “Wundertüte” (bag of surprises) of English words which have kept me amused over the last weeks.
miffed: verärgert
E.g. Sally was really miffed because she wasn’t invited to the party. (Sally war verärgert, weil sie nicht zur Party engeladen war)
tickety-boo: in bester Ornung
E.g.: Don’t worry!. Everythings tickety-boo here. (Mach dir keine Sorgen! Hier ist alles in Ordnung)
lackadaisical: lasch or lustlos
E.g.: If you continue to work in that lackadaisical way, the boss is sure to complain (Wenn Sie weiterhin so lakonisch arbeiten, wird sich der Chef sicher beschwerden)
magpie: die Elster
akimbo: (arms and legs at an angle)
E.g: after she fell her legs were all akimbo. (Nachdem sie gefallen war, waren ihre Beine all in die Seite gestemmt)
mollycoddle: verhätscheln
E.g.It is not good when parents mollycoddle their children (Es ist nicht gut, wenn Eltern ihre kinder verhätseln)
to be on tenterhooks: Spannhaken
E.g. Don’t leave me on tenterhooks! (Lass mich nicht zappeln!)
likeable: sympatisch
E.g: he seemed like a really likeable guy. (Er schien ein wirklich sympathischer Typ zu sein)
*BEWARE Many people confuse this with the English word sympathetic which is verständnisvoll or mitfuhlend E.g.: She was sympathetic and tried to help me. (Sie war verständnisvoll und versuchte, mir zu helfen).
drizzle: der Nieselregen
E.g: Look outside! It is drizzling. (Schau draußen! Es nieselt)
accommodation: Beherbergung (Verbot) THIS IS SO DIFFICULT FOR ME TO REMEMBER!!
E.g: During the Corona pandodemic tourists will not be allowed to stay overnight in hotels etc (Während der CoronaPanodemie wird es eine Beherbergungsverbot geben)
to hoard: hamstern
E.g: People started hoarding toilet paper because they thought there would be a shortage. (Die Leute fingen an, Toilettenpapier zu horten, weil sie dachten, es würde einen Mangel geben).
furniture (singular): die Möbel (pl)
E.g: The furniture was removed from the house on the day of the move (Die Möbel wurden am Umzugstag aus dem Haus enfernt)
